Profile

Born in 1974, Nick Tolentino grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. He created his own sense of music taste by listening to genre’s from pop to disco and hip hop to house.. Intrigued by the birth of house music in the late 80s, the whole house scene created its own identity and eventually its own culture. It was a whole expressive phase that intrigued Nick to be apart of it. In the mid 90s, Nick became more involved in the dj’ing aspect and his record collection grew. Deejaying and promoting parties were hobbies while attending York University to earn a degree in graphic design. In 2001, Nick began to learn how to produce music and write songs thanks to long time and close friend Chris Hercules. It was also when he took on the persona, Plusgroove.

After years of producing tracks and writing songs, Nick Tolentino had the confidence to pursue the music career further. In 2005, Plusgroove Records was established as a sister label to long time friend Gene King’s label, Shines Records. In May 2006, the song Do With You, by Suges featuring Limore, was the first release by Plusgroove Records. Originally an rnb song, the house remix by Eminence made some strong reviews on the streets and became a favourite among New York deejays. In September 2006 , it was included on Defected’s Soul Heaven compilation. In December 2006, it was signed to Syam Music to be re-released as a full house music 12 inch with an additional remix. Sweet Memories by Plusgroove featuring local vocalist Nicole Stoffman, was released also in December 2006. It features remixes by Suges, Genetix, and Plusgroove himself. A third release is in the works for the first quarter of 2007.

In August 2006, a joint record release party with Shines Records was held at Octapus Lounge with the motto ‘Life. Music. Deep.’ This motto served as the brand and philosophy behind both record labels. It was a breakout party for Toronto and the scene. It would let people know that the artists representing house music is alive and well in Toronto.
